Colour Fastness Testing

We can define colourfastness as, having colour that will not run or fade with washing or wear. That means characterizes a material’s colour’s resistance to fading or running. Clothing is colourfast if its colours and dyes do not bleed or run from the clothing. Clothing should be tested for colourfastness before using any type of bleach or bleaching solution, or strong cleaning product. Colourfastness is very important factor for buyer. Colourfastness properties of textiles are an important measure of quality of a product.

Colour Fastness Testing on Fabrics can be done by 5 methods. They are

1. Colour Fastness due to rubbing

2. Colour Fastness due to washing / Dry-cleaning

3. Colour Fastness due to Perspiration and Sea Water

1. Testing colour Fastness due to Rubbing:

i. Manual Crockmeter:

Colour Fastness testing done by Dry Rub and Wet Rub tests. This tests are used for the determination of colour fastness against rubbing, either under dry or under wet conditions. In this test and moving brass finger of specified shape and size rubs against the test specimens under test and the amount of colour transferred to a piece of abradant fabric fixed over the base of the moving finger are graded with the help of standard grey scales to evaluate the colour fastness against rubbing.

Pick Counter - Digital

Purpose

Used to determine the thread density of woven fabrics and wire meshes as well as the loop density of knitwear.

Features

Grey Scale

Comes in ISO standard (from S.D.C UK) and American standard from AATCC – USA.

Helps grading the tested specimen after conducting the rubbing test (grey scale for staining) and wash fastness test (grey scale for colour change).

Also used for colour matching with original specimen (grey scale for colour change ).

Grading of 1 up to 5 can be done.

D75: A bluish colored light source originally used for grading cotton & their evaluation applications. It offers 7500K.

D65: A light bluish colored light source used in color matching applications of paints,textiles,raw inks and other manufactured products. It offers 6500K.

D50: A near white light source used in the evaluation of graphic arts and imaging applications. It offers 5000K.

Ultra violet: Light energy not normally visible to human eye, but which is present in natural daylight.

Blue Wool Standards

SDCE Light Fastness Standards 1 to 8 each pattern 15x25cm

These are a series of 8 wool fabrics dyed with specified blue dyes to give blue wool cloths ranging from very low light fastness to very high light fastness. This forms a numerical scale of 1 to 8 where 1 has the poorest light fastness, to 8 which has the best light fastness. This allows fabrics to be graded, using a Grey Scale for Change in Colour, for correlation with performance in use. This is used to predict the suitability for a given end use; typically apparel would be a minimum of grade 4 whilst furnishings would require a grade 6. They are used in the ISO 105 B series of tests and can be used in conjunction with the Humidity Control fabric for machine calibration.

To complement the range of Blue Wool Standards we also supply specially prepared mounted card that is totally free of any optical brightening agents. This ensures mounted samples are easier to grade as the card does not show a significant Colour change. It is widely recognised that the Colour of the background can influence how an item is finally graded.

SDCE Humidity Control Fabric

This is an azoic dyed cotton fabric with specified fading properties, which varies with the amount of relative humidity.

It is used as a calibration tool for light fastness testing. When the humidity of the light fastness testing machine is correctly set it will fade at an identical rate to the light fastness standard Number 5. It is supplied with a printed instruction sheet for its use to determine the correct settings for the relevant ISO 105 B series test method

Purpose

Used to determine abrasion resistance as well pilling resistance of the knitted/ woven/ home furnishing/ coated fabrics.

Random Pilling Tester

Technical details :

Random tumble pilling tester determines the resistance of textile fabrics both woven and knitted to the formation of pills and other related surface changes. The pills that occur during normal usage of fabric are simulated in test condition. This is done by random rubbing motion by tumbling test specimen in cylindrical test chamber with cork liners. The degree of fabric pilling is evaluated by comparing test specimen with standard photographs .They are rated 1-5 – 1 being very severe pilling and 5 no pilling.

Air Permeability Tester

Air permeability is the property of a fabric to allow passage of air through it under the effect of a difference in pressure across its two faces. It is defined as the volume of air passing through a defined area under a specified pressure difference over a known period of time. It is a very important property for fabrics that are used under conditions where it is necessary to know precisely the amount of air passing through them.
